Founded in 2002 by Hokitika-based Licensed Building Practitioner Hayden Simpson, the company began as H.W. Simpson Builders Ltd and later evolved into Simpson Residential Ltd—reflecting our growth and the broader direction of our work. While we take on a variety of building projects, our true passion lies in residential new builds and renovations.

Meet Hayden Simpson
Hayden Simpson – Director / Licensed Building Practitioner
I grew up in Hari Hari, South Westland, where a pre-trade course at Tai Poutini Polytechnic first sparked my passion for building. That led me to an apprenticeship with a local construction company, where I not only developed hands-on skills but also learned the value of teamwork, strong work ethic, and respect—foundations that still guide me today.
After five years in Nelson, I qualified as a carpenter and gained valuable experience in residential construction, project management, and quality craftsmanship. During that time, my wife and I built our first home—an experience that inspired me to return to the Coast and start my own business, H W Simpson Builders Ltd.
In 2006, we headed off on an OE through the UK and Europe, where I broadened my building knowledge and took on new challenges across a range of projects. When we returned home in 2008, I relaunched my business with a fresh perspective and eventually rebranded as Simpson Residential Ltd to reflect our growth and evolving direction.
Today, I lead a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality workmanship and staying ahead of industry standards. I’m passionate about attention to detail, long-lasting craftsmanship, and making sure every home we build stands the test of time. I hold myself—and our team—to the highest standards, ensuring we deliver exceptional results on every project.
In 2024, we expanded our offering with the launch of SIMPortable—a new venture providing high-quality, transportable homes that are both practical and affordable. It’s an exciting step that reflects our commitment to smart, modern housing solutions.
Outside of work, I enjoy life on the West Coast with my wife and our three boys. I’m proud of how far Simpson Residential has come, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
